Look to the Experts When Purchasing Commercial Kitchen Hoods

Filed under: Articles — Tags: commercial kitchen hoods, installation, kitchen hoods, sell hoods — Massoud Farazandeh @ 8:15 pm

Thursday, March 12, 2009 — DENVER, COLORADO — When it comes to opening a restaurant, some owners and managers try to cut costs by purchasing commercial hoods on their own.
But what may seem like a good deal to a novice in the commercial kitchen hoods arena can be a costly purchase in the long run.

That is why it is important to trust a professional hood sales, installation and maintenance service with the equipment that is vital to a restaurant’s success, said Massoud Farazandeh, general manager of Nationwide Fire Protection Corp., an affiliate of American Professional Services (APS-Hoods).

There is a lot about commercial kitchen hoods that the average person doesn’t know about, Farazandeh said. Still, there are those who believe they can piece them together and save money.

“You need to trust the experts,” he said. “You’re not going to trust a pet groomer to come in and cook your food- you’re going to hire a professional. So why not do that with hood systems sales and installation?”

It is important to note that there are lots of companies throughout the United States that just sell hoods, Farazandeh said.

“It’s much more beneficial to deal with a company that will do the drawings, provide the specifications for the equipment, and design a system that works for you,” he said.

Those companies can stand behind their work and provide follow-up service because they build the systems themselves.

Farazandeh recently met with a new client who, in an attempt to save some money, purchased a used hood for $2,500 at an auction. He thought he was getting a good deal, but that wasn’t the case.

“Unfortunately, this man didn’t know exactly what he needed,” Farazandeh said. “It was difficult to tell him that I could have gotten him a brand new one for $2,300.”

It is because of situations such as this that Farazandeh encourages people in the restaurant industry to speak to a professional before making such a purchase.

“They can talk to us for free and we can tell them what they need,” he said. “There is no obligation to purchase, but it’s good for people to arm themselves with information. If they want us to install the system based on the information we provided, we are happy to do it for them.”

Commercial hood professionals stay abreast of the equipment available in the industry. There is a lot of generic-type equipment being produced and sold at a cheap price to  attract business. Unfortunately, many of the manufacturers don’t stand behind the equipment.

“Once they ship something 3,000 miles away, what are you going to do if you have a problem- package it and send it back?” Farazandeh said. “Most of the time, you aren’t going to go through that hassle.”

It’s best to purchase quality equipment that comes with the proper warranties and have it inspected before accepting the shipment.

“If I’m installing commercial kitchen hoods, I’m the one who’s going to receive the shipment,” he said. “Before that shipment gets off the truck I inspect it and make sure it’s not damaged. Then I sign off on it and take responsibility for it. If anything gets damaged after that, it’s my problem, not the customer’s.”

Farazandeh said the type of turnkey service offered by APS-Hoods is what restaurant owners and managers should look for in a company, regardless of whether they choose to go with him.

“It’s one thing to have someone sell you a kitchen hood system over the phone,” he said. “It’s another to find a company who will guide you along this unfamiliar path and work with you from start to finish to provide only the equipment that you need and to install it in a fashion that is going to save you money on maintenance and service costs down the road.
