Los Angeles Hood Cleaning Company Releases Five Tips on Restaurant Fire Safety
PLACENTIA AND LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA— Massoud Farazandeh, chief executive officer of American Professional Services (APS-Hoods) a Los Angeles hood clenaing, installation and cleaning company, has released a list of five tips that may help prevent a restaurant fire from causing costly, extensive damage.
Farazandeh developed the list to assist restaurant owners and managers after reading reports of several California restaurant fires that have occurred this year, said the kitchen exhaust hood expert.
1. Have commercial kitchen hoods, ducts and fans professionally cleaned on a routine basis.
Doing so prevents grease buildup, which can serve as fuel in the event of a fire. Restaurants using wood fires or smokehouses should have systems cleaned monthly. Those using deep fryers, charbroilers or vegetable oils in large quantities should get them cleaned about every three months.
No restaurant should go longer than six months between cleanings, said Farazandeh, whose company specializes in Los Angeles hood commercial hood services.
2. Obtain fire insurance.
It also is a good idea to carry business-interruption insurance, Farazandeh said, adding this comes in handy, should a fire break out that results in the business being closed for a period of time while repairs are made.
3. Offer basic fire prevention training to employees.
Make sure staff knows to look for potential hazards such as smoking in or near storage areas and storing or using chemicals in poorly ventilated areas. At least one employee on every shift should know how to shut off electricity and gas and in the event of an emergency, Farazandeh said.
4. Offer training in what to do, should a fire occur.
Have a site plan that shows where fire exits are and designate one employee per shift to be evacuation manager. Create a meet-up location close to the restaurant where everyone rallies in case of evacuation.
5. Purchase a fire suppression system.
Systems in commercial kitchens should include tanks on the wall filled with suppression chemicals that are piped to the underside of the stove hood, according to information posted on the National Restaurant Association website.
